New season almost upon us!

Yes, only a month to go till the start of the new season. Put it in your diary now - first fixtures will be in the week commencing 17 September 2007.

The league’s Ordinary General Meeting, commonly referred to as the Handbook Meeting, takes place on Wednesday 5th September at 8.00pm at St Teresa’s C.M.S. Club, Upper Aughton Road, Birkdale, Southport. This is when we’ll find out

  • which teams are in each Division
  • when we’ll be playing them
  • any late amendments to the Handbook

It is also the best opportunity to give our club ranking list to the league secretary, although any time before the start of the season will do.

Every club must have at least one representative at this meeting, but as it’s a very welcoming venue, with a bar, it’s a bit of a social evening too and well worth attending.

This season we have entered five teams in the Southport and District League. The ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams are once again in the second division, but the ‘C’ team is joined in the third division by two new teams.

The ‘D’ team is the new juniors team, captained and coached by last season’s second division player, Paul Lunan. Rumours that Paul is seeking to improve his average by playing in the third division are hotly denied!

At the other end of the age spectrum, the new ‘E’ team will consist of social players drawn from membership of the Aughton & Ormskirk U3A Table Tennis Group. A happy bunch, and always keen to learn, they’ve never even heard the expression, “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks!”

When? Every Thursday evening during the summer from 7.30 to 9.30pm at Southport College.

This is our big attempt to avoid the A and B teams coming bottom of Division 2 again next year - only time will tell how useful it has been!
