Southport ‘E’ v Paraplegics

The ‘E’ team (‘E’ for exhausted ) visited Kew Hospital for the third time this season on Wednesday 14th Nov. and suffered a hat trick of defeats by losing 1-9.

Gil Jamieson distinguished himself with a victory in one of his singles and Norah took her opponent in one event to 5 games.

Elsewhere odd games were won but not in sufficient numbers to gain another set.

A fourth meeting is scheduled towards the end of the season and there is determination throughout the squad to record at least a few more games and, perhaps, another set or two against these formidable opponents.

The ‘Challenge’ ‘C’ v ‘E’

The ‘C’ s entertained the’E’ s ( ‘E’ for eclipsed) on Wednesday 7th Nov. and regaled them with first class refreshments and chocolates. That was were the hospitality ended however as they ran out comprehensive winners by 9 sets to 1.

Some good games and rallies ensued and Norah chalked up a praiseworthy but solitary win for the ‘E’ team. Ken enjoyed a close set against Tom Taylor and he & Charles made Toms Taylor & Banton work hard for their 3 games to 1 victory in the doubles.

Dennis Walton made his debut and Sue Nutting who was elevated to the ‘C’ team celebrated the occasion by with a victory in the 4 v 4 singles event.

The Long and the Short of it – Pushing!

The most basic stroke, and the most frequently used one, is the push. Whether your best winning shot is a vicious forehand smash or a super-spin loop or a swerving spin serve that hits the edge, you still need a bread-and-butter shot in your armoury. For most people, this should be the solid foundation of your game because without a dependable push shot, you’ll never get enough chances to hit your special winner anyway!

The push isn’t just for getting the ball back over the net – though that’s no bad thing in itself. It is also the basis of the heavy chop return, and, if used with subtle variations, is a useful way to create an opening for a winning attack.

Greg Letts has written an article about the merits of Pushing Long versus Pushing Short and it is well worth a read

The Big Challenge

An [almost] all-U3A clash looms this Wednesday when the ‘C’ team plays host to the ‘E’ team. I guess you all knew the ‘E’ team squad comprised a dozen or so U3A members, but perhaps you didn’t realise that the ‘C’ team has its fair share of retirees too.

U3A members Tom Taylor and Tom Banton move up the order, while Alan Nolan is rested for this match to make way for another member, Sue Nutting, from the ‘E’ team squad. Andy Hickey represents the non-retired sector. The “visitors” are expected to field regulars Charles Coombes, Ken Ray and Norah Fitzsimmons with Dennis Walton making his debut.

It should be a good match.

Southport ‘E’ v Paraplegics in Gunson Cup

For the second time this season the ‘E’ team ( ‘E’ for enervated ) met Paraplegics at the Southport Hospital. On this occasion in the Gunson Cup.

Taking only 80 points handicap with us, it was always going to be an uphill struggle but at the halfway stage there was still hope with the aggregate score (inc. our handicap ) being 196 to 192 in favour of the home team. In the second half ,however, Paraplegics took control and ran out winners by 431 to 314.

Playing 2 sets of 5 games was a new challenge for the U3A battlers but one set was won by 10 points, Len won a game and both Gil & Pat Boylett recorded individual game victories on their first appearances in the team. Well done to them!
