‘E’ v Paraplegics

After the comprehensive drubbing by the ‘C’ team last week the ‘E’ team ( E for elated but only mildly) travelled to the Paraplegics venue for the fourth time this season and came away with a hard fought 5-5 draw.

All team members enjoyed success in singles or doubles but Ken was the star by winning both his singles ( one v Ian Littlewood ) and the doubles with Charles. Tom & Gil returned excellent singles victories to help the team claim it’s second draw of the season but an outright win still E ludes us. Maybe next week…..

Keeping the best till last?

The eagerly anticipated match between the Southport ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams has been put back a couple of weeks. Colin Fyles reckons he couldn’t get together a full team, but the rumour mill has it that he was scared of facing a strong line-up of Peter Tod, Alan Nolan, Dave Ferguson and Stan Clarke ;-)

Whatever the reason, the re-arranged match still promises to be a “close encounter”, albeit without the usual Spielberg special effects. Look out for some UFO’s from Colin’s devastating backhand though!

Watch this space for the re-arranged date.

Let’s play table tennis!

In the 2006-7 season, 25 teams competed in 3 divisions; in 2007-8, 28 teams started, but this became 27 after only a few weeks. Our club entered 2 additional teams and both Argyle and Formby Holy Trinity entered one; North Meols dropped a team. The 1st and 2nd divisions now have 9 and 8 teams respectively, while division 3 has 10. An improvement, certainly, but it could be better.

Two of the four new teams consist of juniors, and another (Southport ‘E’) consists of elderly more mature players, mainly new to the competitive game. Their lack of experience hasn’t dimmed their enthusiasm, and both young and old have improved considerably during the first half of the season. Without these extra teams, the league would have faced the possibility of shrinking further, to only 2 divisions of 12 or 13 teams. Many of the top players also compete in Liverpool, and if their season got too crowded the Southport League would be the one to suffer, with some players and teams dropping out altogether.

I believe deliberate expansion is the only way to break out of this spiral. Other clubs need to be bold enough to field additional teams of less experienced players – if enough new teams entered the league in the lowest division, it would have the following benefits:

(a) produce a more evenly balanced and competitive Division 3,
(b) enable more teams to move up into divisions 1 and 2 to give a full fixture programme,
(c) provide a training ground for younger players to get experience without suffering heavy defeats,
(d) provide opportunities for older people to play competitively, again without suffering heavy defeats.

I think some other clubs are currently taking a very short-term view of their situation: their better players are reluctant to play in the lower divisions because they don’t get a decent game; they may even be reluctant to have less able players in their teams. This discourages the younger or less able players and eventually there will be fewer young players coming through to the higher divisions and the game will finally peter out.

10 or 20 years ago, there were around 10 divisions in the Southport League. We may never get back to that scenario, but the future of the game does depend on us all doing our best to promote it and to actively encourage others to join in the fun.

E team v FormbyTTC E

The E ( ‘E’ for extremely unsuccessful ) team met Formby TTC this week and failed to improve on the 1-9 result against the same side earlier in the season. In fact the result was even worse as we went down 0-10. Comparing the results over the two matches, however, some comfort can be taken from the closeness of many games and the fact that a number of events went to four & five games.

Next up the ‘C’ team (‘C’ for calamitous ? )- will be for us!

The ‘E’ team which is comprised of Aughton & Ormskirk U3A members have the prospect of a match against Mawdesley U3A but the date for the match is uncertain as Mawdesley’s hall is being re decorated. Just as well we are not going to be there during the refurbishment as there might have been the dubious distinction of being whitewashed twice!

Practice night 14th February

…is still on, even though it is half-term, even though it is Valentine’s Day!

‘E’ team Gunson Plate

Passing swiftly over 3 more League defeats in recent weeks, the ‘E’  (E for eliminated) team enjoyed a close encounter with Formby H T ‘D’ in the Gunson Plate on 29th January.

After the adjustment of the handicap Southport lost by just 11 points. This outstanding achievement was made by Ken winning one singles and amassing valuable points in the other. If Charles, Tom & Norah had managed to scrape a further 12 points between them in their games the match would have been won. Nevertheless it was a creditable performance against a very strong Division 2 side.
