Club Championship – Sunday, 4th July 2010, from 1.15 pm

Details of the club championship, to be held at Southport College sports hall on Sunday, 4th July 2010 from 1.15pm to 5.30pm:

Competitions

Assuming 20 players will enter, we would organise matches along the following lines:

Main competition

  • Group round: four groups of 5 players, each playing the other 4 players once
  • Top 2 from each group go forward into the main Cup knock-out competition
  • Round 1: winner of Group A plays runner-up of Group B, etc.
  • Semi-Finals involving winners of Round 1
  • Final
  • Winner of the final receives the club trophy to keep for 12 months
  • Individual memento trophies for winner and runner-up

Plate competition

  • the remaining 12 people (or so) from the main competition go into a handicap “Plate” competition
  • Four groups of 3, each playing the other 2 players once
  • Semi-Finals involving winners of each group goes on to a semi-final knock-out round
  • Final
  • Winner of the final receives a club handicap plate to keep for 12 months
  • Individual memento trophies for winner and runner-up

All players are guaranteed at least 5 matches, and the finalists of both the cup and plate events will have played 8 matches.

There will be an entry fee of £5 per player, with water and squash included!
Tea and coffee available for a small charge.

Other events

If enough parents and family members come, we may have some other activities, such as a “beat the goalie” competition (any volunteers to be the goalie?), badminton or basketball shoot-out, but we need to know how many people will be there.

Another kind of game?

Last week I organised a match with a difference! As well as playing league table tennis in Southport, I also play some ‘social table tennis’ at the Aughton & Ormskirk U3A and to celebrate our 5th birthday, we invited other local U3As to a challenge match, the winners to host the event the following year.

Each of the four U3As (Maghull, Mawdesley, Upholland and our own) fielded two teams of 4 players (2 men and 2 women) for what turned out to be a most enjoyable afternoon, with 30 sets of 21-up being played in a spirit of keen competition and sportsmanship. After a mini-league stage and a knock-out stage, Mawdesley  ‘A’ eventually beat Aughton & Ormskirk ‘B’ quite easily in the final to become the first winners of the trophy.

Tea, coffee and biscuits were provided throughout the afternoon as part of the celebration week and we were most grateful for them.

An interesting spin-off is that Upholland U3A will now be setting up a regular table tennis group, and we wish them all the best with that. Maybe by next year they will be strong contenders for the trophy.
