Undefeated!

The new season got under way this week, and the club has yet to lose a match! Mind you, only 2 have been played, one resulting in a draw, and the other had a winning margin enhanced by the opponents being 1 player short.

The A team held St Teresa’s D to a draw, with Colin Fyles and Jim Irving winning both their singles and Dave Williams picking up the other point. The doubles was a weakness last season, and remains a weakness.

The B team, with three substitutes, got off to a flying start when Formby HT E turned up with only 3 players. Paul Lunan then raced to a quick win against Paul Oakes, whilst Ron Makin pulled one back for the visitors in a close game against Dai Davies. Alan Nolan and Tom Taylor won their solitary singles games, and Dai Davies completed the home team’s scoring with an easy win against Des Logan. Formby then won the only doubles game against Alan & Tom.

Another practice evening

Wednesday, 28th January – as notified a long, long time ago in the practice night schedule.

There will also be one or more practice nights next week, on Tuesday and/or Wednesday and/or Thursday, because the only teams left in the Anon Plate competition are drawn away from home. One of the nights may be used for a rearranged match, so I will update the list of practice nights as soon as I know which days are available.

Another kind of game?

Last week I organised a match with a difference! As well as playing league table tennis in Southport, I also play some ‘social table tennis’ at the Aughton & Ormskirk U3A and to celebrate our 5th birthday, we invited other local U3As to a challenge match, the winners to host the event the following year.

Each of the four U3As (Maghull, Mawdesley, Upholland and our own) fielded two teams of 4 players (2 men and 2 women) for what turned out to be a most enjoyable afternoon, with 30 sets of 21-up being played in a spirit of keen competition and sportsmanship. After a mini-league stage and a knock-out stage, Mawdesley  ‘A’ eventually beat Aughton & Ormskirk ‘B’ quite easily in the final to become the first winners of the trophy.

Tea, coffee and biscuits were provided throughout the afternoon as part of the celebration week and we were most grateful for them.

An interesting spin-off is that Upholland U3A will now be setting up a regular table tennis group, and we wish them all the best with that. Maybe by next year they will be strong contenders for the trophy.

Enjoy the break!

Are you looking forward to any ping pong pressies this Christmas? Will Santa be bringing you a new bat? Or some new kit? What about some coaching videos or maybe even a copy of the rules of table tennis?

Whatever you get, may I wish you all a very merry Christmas and, when it comes, a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year.
